ATEX Directives: Safety in Explosive Atmospheres
Since July 2003, companies must comply with ATEX regulations to protect workers in areas at risk of explosion.
Types of ATEX Directives
There are two ATEX directives regulating both equipment and work environments in areas at risk of explosion:
- ATEX 95 (Directive 94/9/EC): Regulates equipment and protective systems designed for use in explosive atmospheres.
- ATEX 137 (Directive 99/92/EC): Establishes minimum requirements to protect the safety and health of workers in these areas.
Classification of Explosive Zones
Hazardous areas are classified into different zones based on the probability of an explosion occurring.
Zone 0
Explosive atmosphere is continuously present or present for long periods.
Zone 1
Explosive atmosphere is likely to occur under normal operating conditions.
Zone 2
Explosive atmosphere is unlikely, and if it occurs, only for short periods.
Zone 20
Combustible dust cloud is continuously present.
Zone 21
Combustible dust cloud is occasionally present.
Zone 22
Combustible dust cloud is only present in exceptional cases.
